Things to do in Self-Isolation…

… by Rachel / from Isle of Arran / BSc Mathematics / 1st Year (UG)

A lot of things have changed these past weeks and we’ve had to adjust to working from home and doing all our classes online. (For those of you struggling to work in your rooms I personally find I am more productive working in the hallway than on my bed). However, the harder adjustment is figuring out how to stay entertained and connected with our friends so I thought I would share some of the things my flatmates and I have been doing to make our days a little more interesting.

1. Host a dinner party

Half the fun of going out is getting dressed up which you can still do during self-isolation! Cook everyone in your flat a nice meal and put on that outfit you bought for that event you didn’t get to go to and have a dinner party.

2. Do a puzzle

Last week my flatmates decided we should all do a puzzle and once we got started we couldn’t stop. Trust me it’s a lot more fun than you think.

3. Attend online events

Loads of people are hosting all kinds of online events ranging from pub quizzes and open mic nights to church services and museum tours. See if you can find the online version of whatever events you loved attending before or start your own.

4. Follow live workouts

Exercising daily will make you feel so much better and I find the easiest way to consistently do that is to follow along to a live workout session. Of course, there are also loads of YouTube videos you can use as well.

5. Learn a dance

Take an online salsa class, practice swing dancing, learn a TikTok dance or just play some music and have a dance party.

6. Start a creative project

Knit a scarf, make alterations to your clothes, take a drawing class, learn a song on the guitar, write a short story, design a website, or perfect your favourite desert. Whatever it is that you have said you’ve always wanted to try, now is the time to do it.

7. Do nothing

Uni life can be really busy and for some people this may be the break they’ve been needing. If you are feeling overwhelmed and anxious and you just need to spend a few days watching your favorite movies that is completely fine. Please take care of yourself and ask for help if you need it.
